Saif Rubie: Grant stays away because Ghana league is poor

Agent of Black Stars coach Avram Grant, Saif Rubie, has defended his client’s decision to stay longer in Europe than in Ghana  by saying that the Ghanaian league is not of the highest quality. Black Stars Management Committee chairman George Afriyie said on Citi Sports’ Sports Panorama on Friday 21st August that the GFA was unhappy with the coach due to his prolonged stay in Europe on a recent working trip. But Saif Rubie has responded to Afriyie’s comments and said Grant did not find any quality players in the Ghanaian league thus, pushing him to spend more time and look at more players in Europe.

“Grant eats and sleeps Ghanaian football but it is just unfortunate that at the moment, the quality of the league in Ghana is not as at its peak. Even if there are players who do very well in Ghana, these players end up in the second or third division in Europe or they go to places like Vietnam or Thailand and obviously for Avram Grant, these are not the kind of players he would like to pick for the national team.” He added: “The pool of players in Ghanaian league is not at the required standard or level.

If you look at the players Grant recently called for the national team, you cannot argue with the ones he chose.” Grant is expected to name Ghana’s team to play against Congo and Rwanda in a double-header in September in Brazzaville for an international friendly and Kigali for a second round of the 2017 AFCON qualifier.   -
